The Elephant was the unofficial mascot of the Athletics in the early 20th century thanks to an offhand comment made by New York Giants Hall of Fame manager John McGraw. The Athletics manager and fellow Hall of Famer, Connie Mack, was amused by the comment and incorporated the "white elephant" into their branding.
